For liquid crystal, what accused the most by many people is the response time.It is the reason that people often will find the blurry ghost image on a conventional LCD when displaying the video.Response time of LCD is actually the twisting time of liquid crystal element.To move liquid crystal element faster, there are generally three methods:

  1. Increase the driving voltage: the moving speed of liquid crystal element is related to the voltage.The higher the voltage is, the faster the moving speed of liquid crystal element is.

  2. Change the initial status of liquid crystal element: this method is actually making liquid crystal element in the unstable condition.Once there is an action, [liquid crystal] will react immediately and increase the response time.However, this method cannot be practiced unlimitedly because liquid crystal can be too unstable to control effectively.
  3. Decrease the density of liquid crystal: the denser the liquid crystal is, the more difficult to drive.It is the same logic that an agreement is difficult to reach if there are too many people.It would be easier to drive if the density of liquid crystal is reduced; thus, the response time can be faster.However, reducing the density of liquid crystal will affect the ability of light control.The response time is improved, yet the price paid for is high.The lower the density [of liquid crystal] is, the darker the screen is; the detail of pictures will also become blurrier, and the phenomenon of light leak will occur slightly.

Whereas the huge disadvantages of 2nd and 3rd methods, hence, currently the decreasing response time of gray scale depends on the increasing voltage, that is, the technique of Over Drive. Over Drive technique, which is mainly focusing on rising time, provides an overshoot voltage.And this instant overshoot voltage is actually experiencing one rising and one falling process and back to target voltage at the end; therefore, shorten the original time of rising process.Currently the IC chips used for accomplishing Over Drive is Vastview Techonology Inc.’s OD (Over Drive) series and SamSung’s RTA (Response Time Accelerator) chip.The main model of OD chip is CTIO3601.
